VideoStudio Pro X3 marks the 2010 release of Corel’s popular home video editing software and before I get into what’s under the hood there are few things that need to be clarified.
When Corel originally bought out Intervideo a few years back the existing Ulead products that were under that banner became Corel products.
Of those products a few were sent to the graveyard as always happens in these situations and of course a few survived.
VideoStudio was one of the survivors and the previous version Pro X2 was the first to be released totally under the Corel mark. To be blunt, that version sent some worrying messages from the Corel camp. They released the software with known issues regarding AVCHD rendering.
They ignored not only their own highly active and supportive forum but also didn’t bother to fix some major software problems the forum itself was running on. To cut a long story short it looked as though Corel would be the kiss of death to what was once excellent consumer video editing software.
Since then Corel has been bought out by it’s major shareholder and the company taken back into private hands for what purpose remains unclear. So it was against this ominous background that word of the new version came.
The good news is that Corel seem to have turned this situation around and even before the release of VideoStudio Pro X3 have taken steps to get back on track.
They have thrown full support behind the user to user forum which is one of the best around and included the senior members of that forum in the beta testing of this new release. This is the first time that the “old hands” have had a part in a new version since the days of Ulead.
As one of those beta testers I can report that the not only were those on the tests listened to, they were listened to with interest and their concerns and suggestion were acted on… The result?
VideoStudio Pro X3 marks a welcome return to form for what was once my favorite video editing software aimed at the consumer level and is very much well worth a trial run on your set up to see how you like it.
